Coffee Expedition
Coffee drinking was so popular, which almost certainly began in the Middle East,
where it was discovered for its flavorful and aromatic characteristic, made only
from coffee beans and water.
Up to the 10th century, in fact, men used coffee as foodstuff in the region
where the plants grew wild. Initially they probably ate only the thin layer of
the sweet pulp that surrounded the seeds or beans, until the
"magic" stimulant properties of the beans were discovered.
Coffee began to get more attention when the Arabs began cultivating it in their
peninsulas around eleven hundred AD. It is speculated that trade ships brought
the coffee their way. The Arabs started making a drink that became quite popular
called gahwa – meaning to prevent sleep.
Around the 14th century, the roasting of the bean began to take place. The
mystical aromas and the pleasing flavors were surrounding the atmosphere in
every house around the Middle East.
It was a sign of hospitality and goodwill to offer the visitor on his arrival, a
cup of coffee and soon began to be the beverage that was consumed around the
clock.
